Jackets, Leaves, and a Chill in in the Air
Digging into the closet for a jacket, I’m aware that summer is well and truly over for the year. There have been signs along the way, each one adding to my excitement little by little. There is the cooling of the night air and the seasonal mowing of grass in the field behind my home. Shortening days bringing night upon us earlier and of course, the changing of the leaves. But there is one event that has yet to happen, the one remaining detail that I look forward to each and every year that tells me winter is near. This little moment that brings me such joy is the first time I can see my breath in the air.
I don’t know what it is about this moment and why I get giddy the first time it happens but, it does. Maybe it’s something about a visible signal that has lodged in my mind or maybe knowing the heat and humidity will vacate my surroundings. Possibly a hold-over trigger from alternate career. I don’t know if I’ll ever know but, I look forward to that first visible breath with the (almost) the same excitement for the first snowflake to land.
