Painted Skies, A Walk in a Notch, and Tip for Success

Vermont Aurora

In early May a solar phenomenon cause widespread aurora activity to much of the northern hemisphere.

Seeing the aurora has been a long-time goal of mine. With clear night skies (another rarity!) I made my way to Stowe where I was able to capture this long-exposure image.

One Tip For Higher Success

I see so many YouTube videos, how-to guides, and social media posts all surrounding “hacks”, lists, or other quick ways to improve your photography. These site do have their uses and I even used them at one point. However, there is one thing that no hack can ever replace and that’s simply practice. It doesn’t matter what trick you’ve set up to back-button focus faster if you haven’t practiced enough to develop the muscle memory. It won’t matter if you’ve programmed a bunch of custom shooting modes if you don’t know where the buttons are in the dark. It really doesn’t matter if you know words like “balance”, “thirds”, “chiaroscuro”, or “contrast” if you don’t put in the time to see them in your daily life.

My one tip for success is this: practice, practice practice.

You aren’t going to make great art every time you step out to practice photography but, it is through great practice that art will emerge. Don’t worry about the “bad” images, we only fall when we’re trying something we don’t already know how to do.

Next Photo Walk - May 26th!

Smuggler’s Notch

The notch between Stowe and Jeffersonville has finally opened for the summer! A beautiful bit of land with steep canyon walls flanking it, Smuggler’s Notch is very beautiful! I have only photographed it in the late Autumn time so, I’m excited to see the area with the new growth, running water and, with any luck, some sunshine! And, since we’ll be in the area, I’d love to take the short hike in to see Bingham Falls, which should be flowing very nicely!

Please note, there is limited parking at the top. I do have some extra room in my vehicle, if you would like to meet prior to venturing up please reach out and we’ll set up a meeting location.

Take a look at past photo walk images!

I hope these ideas, tips, and treats are helpful to you. If you have found them to be, feel free to share this newsletter with others. I try to put out two a month, the first of the month being news and updates for my work, and the middle of the month freely sharing things you may find helpful.

Thank you and keep creating!
